This role blends traditional executive chef duties with a mission-centered focus, including mentoring and working alongside individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a supportive and skill-building environment.

The Head Chef must be both creative and strategic—capable of delivering high-quality, nutritious meals while building a positive culture rooted in teamwork, training, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

Café & Restaurant Oversight:

  • Manage day-to-day kitchen operations including prep, service, sanitation, and food safety.
  • Create and update café and restaurant menus based on seasonality, nutrition, and customer feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with all health department standards and food handling regulations.
  • Monitor kitchen inventory and order supplies, staying within budget.
  • Train and supervise kitchen staff and volunteers, including individuals with disabilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness, efficiency, and professionalism across all back- and front-of-house operations.

Catering & Special Events:

  • Design, coordinate, and execute catering for in-house and off-site events (e.g., luncheons, fundraisers, galas, and community celebrations).
  • Work with clients, event planners, and internal teams to develop menus that meet dietary needs and event goals.
  • Lead food preparation and service for large groups while ensuring quality, presentation, and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with TDC staff to support community-building events such as dances, movie nights, family dinners, and partner-sponsored gatherings.

Inclusive Training & Vocational Support:

  • Provide culinary instruction, job coaching, and skill development opportunities to individuals with disabilities.
  • Model and teach foundational kitchen skills (e.g., knife safety, food prep, dishwashing, cleanliness, time management).
  • Support individuals in practicing hospitality and customer service during café shifts and catered events.
  • Partner with job coaches and program staff to ensure alignment with individual goals and accommodations.

Team Leadership & Administration:

  • Recruit, onboard, and manage kitchen personnel, volunteers, and vocational trainees.
  • Prepare and manage kitchen budget, track expenditures, and submit reports as needed.
  • Work closely with Operations and Program teams to ensure consistent service and support across departments.
  • Develop systems and SOPs to maintain efficiency, safety, and quality control.

Additional Expectations:

  • Represent the mission and values of TDC with professionalism, compassion, and enthusiasm.
  • Be available on evenings/weekends for events as scheduled.
  • Build positive relationships with staff, families, community partners, and guests.
  • Maintain flexibility and problem-solving under pressure in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as an executive chef or lead culinary professional
  • Proven experience in catering and large-scale meal preparation
  • Experience working with or supporting individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (preferred or willingness to be trained)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and budgeting ability
  • Culinary degree or equivalent professional training (preferred)
  • Current Food Handler’s or ServSafe Certification (required or must obtain)

Work Environment:

This position operates in a high-impact, collaborative, and values-driven setting that combines hospitality, vocational development, and community service. The Head Executive Chef will need to balance creativity with compliance, coaching with culinary leadership, and daily operations with long-term planning.
